Process / Encaustic Paintings
These are encaustic paintings (pigmented wax and resin) that have detailed colored pencil drawings on light weight paper or rice paper, cut out and then embedded onto the painted wax backgrounds. Small collage pieces and hand sewn elements are added as well. Molten beeswax is poured over the top as the finishing layer and when cooled, scraped back to reveal the figure(s) underneath.

The smaller encaustic paintings (12" x 6" x 2", 12" x 8" x 2") are done in editions of three. Each of the figures in the three within the edition is hand drawn and unique from the other two pieces in the edition and the encaustic background and collage elements are different in each as well. Once all three in the edition are sold, that particular creature will not be seen again in that size piece (he or she might show up in another medium or a larger encaustic painting in some form, you never know)

Process / Silverpoint
A special gesso is prepared, heated on the stove and applied in 15 to 20 layers onto panels or paper. Each coat of gesso is dried before adding the next coat, and lightly sanded between coats. The final coat is left to dry for 72 hours or more, then sanded lightly again as final preparation for the drawing. The drawing is done with a metal tip (silver) embedded in a wooden stylus. The final drawing will tarnish when the line reacts with sulfer in the air and turn from a graphite like line to a more sepia colored one, much like silverware tarnishes. The drawing takes time to build up intensity, and I work slowly as the process does not permit me to erase.
